Enquanto assim, fomos descobrindo a nossa própria horta.
E assim temos agora o nosso líquido dourado.

We’re a group of people united by a simple ideal: living on the Land. Strongly convinced that going back to the country side and the forest would be the only way to achieve a deep connection with Nature, we designed our path to the Centre of Portugal, were we revisited the history (still alive) written by our farmers, mill men, pottery makers – professions at risk of extinction. One of our aims is to establish a connection with the local people creating a bridge between the generations. We intend to learn and keep alive the ancient knowledge and wisdom that introduces us to the way of living with the forces of Nature, understanding, accepting and being thankful for them.
Natural farming and organic biodynamic agriculture, promotes the health of the Earth and consequently our own, and will be the base of our model of sustainability. At the same time we will encourage the consumption of healthy food and its local production.
Our first experience living on the land took place in Quinta do Boiço, in Póvoa de Midões (Tábua), where, during six months, we took our first steps on this magnificent journey back to the origins. There we dried apples in the sun, taking the best of the fruits that had fallen to the ground. We made grape juice, obtaining the nectar from bunches that would otherwise have fed the Earth.
The surplus of our honoured friends – local farmers- brought us an abundance of local produced vegetables to our communal kitchen. We have even made apple vinegar, preserved succulent tomatoes for the winter and a little bit of our own wine.
We also experimented with drying figs, pears and blackberries. In the meantime, we discovered our own gardens not only in Quinta do Boiço, but also in the surrounding forest. Under a blanket of brambles, on land not touched for decades, we found rich soil. Following the biodynamic principles we seeded and transplanted a great diversity of vegetables, such as broad beans, peas, rocket, parsley, cabbage, lettuce, turnips, parsnip, garlic… To our care and love, the Earth responded with a magic gift: the last full moon of the year (2008) gave life to a well that had been sleeping for years, and that subsequently became our new water source.
Then came the olive season. There was no way of avoiding the olive tree, strongly present in our Portuguese culture. Once more, our people, as well as our foreign friends revealed their generosity. Feeling honoured with the use we were giving to the fruits on the ground and to the vegetables, people continued to offer their olives, from the ground and from the trees. From this harvest we received our golden liquid. It was a very delicate encounter with these ‘living sculptures, to which we always request and give thanks. Pecking like chickens, one by one, choosing the brown from the green olives, removing every leaf with a lot of love, our olives gave birth to a very refined and tasty olive oil much loved by us and our friends. Priceless! We even received compliments from the crew and management of the lagar. We received as well the offer of some material support for the future development of our olive oil-based soap and washing liquid production. This work with the olive trees brought us into deep contact, understanding and communication with the trees and plant kingdom. Production and preserving olives for eating has become part of our inner economy. We made research and experiments on techniques of biodynamic and organic processing of the olives, giving great results and wide range of different olives preserved and packed into glasses.
Now a new path is on our horizon. We gave impulse to and continue to support the Local Permaculture Network – Sustainable Beira Serra, which encompasses all the concepts, techniques and knowledge necessary for a sustainable way of life.
It is our intention to create a nursery of native trees, with a view to promoting the reforestation of the country, namely in the zones damaged by fire. Closing the circle at Quinta do Boiço, we search again for the PROMISED LAND where we can continue to write another beautiful page of the book of our lives. Our aim is taking care of a farm were we can develop our concept of life.
We offer responsible and conscious care of the land, by not using any chemical products that damage the soil, respect for the native Portuguese forest, support for the plantation of fruit trees and practicing natural agriculture. As we are in the middle of winter, we would need some basic structures in which to live.
A big thank you to everyone that is supporting our project, whether it is on an emotional or material level!
Special thanks to Toivo, Annie and família, the family from the Café Príncipe – Sr. Fernando, D. Lurdes e Gonçalo -, D.
